The Black Stone of Makkah

The Black Stone of Makkah or Khana Kaaba Stone, is a Muslim artifact, according to the Islamic tradition that connects back to the time of Adam and Eve. It is the eastern cornerstone of the Khana Kaaba, which is referred as the ancient sacred stone building towards which Muslims from all over the  pray in that direction located  in the center of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The Stone is basically a dark rock, polished smooth by the hands of millions of pilgrims that has been broken into a number of small fragments cemented into a silver frame in the side of the Khana Kaaba. Although it has often been described as a meteorite but tis believe is still under consideration

The Stone is roughly 30 cm (12 in.) in diameter, and 1.5 meters (5 ft.)  Placed above the ground. When pilgrims circle the Khana Kaaba as part of the Tawaf ritual during the Hajj or Umrah, many of the pilgrims try, to stop and kiss the Black Stone if they can do it, emulating the kiss that it received from the act of Islamic Prophet Hazrat Muhammad. But if pilgrims cannot reach it, then they are required to point toward it direction on each of their seven circuits around the Khana Kaaba during Tawaf. The Stone was broken into a number of pieces by the damage during the Middle Ages. The pieces are placed together by a silver frame, which is held by the silver nails to the Stone.

There are various opinions about what the Black Stone actually is. Muslims say that the Stone was found by Hazrat Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ismail when they were searching for stones with which they can built Khana Kaaba as ordered by the Allah Almighty. They recognized its worth and made the stone one of the building’s cornerstones.

Secular historians point toward the history of stone worship, and especially refer it to meteorite worship, according to the pre-Islamic Arabia, and say that the stone is likely to be a meteorite. There is no way to test this hypothesis without removing the stone and examining it which would not be allowed by its guardians, Saudi Arabian government.

There is no proper indication where this stone originated, but according to its pre-dates the revelation of the Holy Qur’an and Muhammad’s Prophet Hood, and even kissing done by the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad, it must stem from the time of Hazrat Ibrahim since the Hajj traditions started.

The Khana Ka’bah situated at  Makkah describes the shape of the black stone structure on a marble base which stands in the center court of the Grand Mosque also called as Masjid ul Haram, at the center of Makkah.
